Speech Therapy Services

Niagara Speech Connections provides a wide range of services designed to benefit the needs of our clients.  We offer services within our clinic as well as private home visits.

Articulation & Phonological Disorders

Articulation Disorder
An articulation disorder involves difficulties making sounds. Sounds may be substituted, left off, changed, or added. For example, instead of saying “yellow”, one might say “lellow”. Errors such as these can make communication difficult.

Phonological Disorder
A phonological process disorder involves patterns of sound errors. Usually, the more phonological processes a child uses in speech, the more unintelligible their speech can be. It is common for young children learning speech to engage in these speech related errors but is not expected as a child gets older.

Language Disorders

When a child has trouble getting his/her meaning across through speech, writing, or gestures, they may have a language disorder. When a child has difficulty expressing meaning to other people, it is called an expressive language disorder. When they have difficulty understanding other people, it is called a receptive language disorder. Some children may have difficulty with both, which is called a mixed receptive-expressive language disorder.

Teletherapy

Online speech sessions are quite similar to in-person therapy, where virtual resources replace traditional methods of engagement. Today’s children are growing increasingly comfortable with computers and technology, with some children even more engaged with technological resources. With this increasing trend towards digital learning, online speech therapy is becoming a more prevalent learning tool.

Stuttering

Stuttering affects the fluency of speech. It is characterized by disruptions in the production of speech sounds, also known as dysfluencies. An example of a dysfluency may be repeating words or the overuse of “um” or “uh”. Dysfluencies are not necessarily a problem but they can affect communication when an individual produces too many of them. Stuttered speech often includes repetitions of words or parts of words, along with prolongations of speech sounds. These occur more often in individuals who stutter than those who don’t. Interjections can also occur (i.e., “um”, “like”), when they contain repeated or prolonged speech sounds.

Other Services

French Services
We are happy to offer speech and language services in French to our multilingual communities! Our team is experienced in understanding the typical speech sound and language development in French individuals, as well as speech sound and language impairments among bilingual speakers.

Reading, Writing, and Literacy
Reading comprehension, spelling and writing, vocabulary development, reading fluency, improving phonemic awareness (ability to manipulate individual sounds in spoken words). We offer one-on-one services to ensure you or your child receive a specifically tailored plan to maximize reading, writing, and literacy success!

Social Skills
Many children with language delays also have difficulty with social interaction and social skills. Some of these skills include: understanding social rules, using appropriate language and body language, conversational turn-taking, understanding social signals, and perspective taking.

English as a Second Language
Improve the pronunciation of words as well as the proper usage of grammar and language.
